About the book
Psychologist and psychoanalyst Miquel Gómez publishes his first book, ReMi, the boy who faces the world solo, with illustrations by the acclaimed illustrator Elena Nieto. It is an illustrated children’s story that explores autism spectrum disorder (ASD) from a sensitive, respectful and deeply human perspective.
The story begins on the first day of term in the three-year-olds’ class. The children arrive at school and discover the playground, the classrooms, the teachers and their new classmates. Among them is ReMi, a boy with autism spectrum disorder. As the year goes on, the teacher and the other children notice that his behaviour is different from everyone else’s, but they also discover that music can become an essential ally in building a shared, inclusive educational experience.
Through the story, the book shows how music can act as a bridge for communication, emotional expression and social connection. With the involvement and goodwill of everyone around the child – families, school and organisations – music makes it possible to create an inclusive environment that helps improve the quality of life of children with ASD and their families.
This illustrated story is a great psycho-educational resource for raising awareness among children (and adults too) of neurodiversity, showing how people with autism spectrum disorder can have specific interests – in this case, music – that become a strength when they are understood and properly supported.
The book is especially suitable for early years and primary, as well as for families and professionals in education, psychology and special education. As well as its value as a story, it offers clear educational benefits:
-
Helps develop reading comprehension
-
Encourages sensitivity towards neurodiversity
-
Promotes inclusive music education
ReMi, the boy who faces the world solo is a story that invites us to look at diversity with empathy and respect, using music as a tool for educational and social change from an early age.
