Thanks to its size, tuning and ease of use, the soprano ukulele is especially well suited to introducing music at school.

Throughout the book, children gradually discover the different types of ukulele, learning to identify their main features, as well as the parts of the instrument, with clear terminology adapted to their level. This first contact with the instrument builds a close, respectful relationship with making music, encouraging independence and curiosity.

One of the cornerstones of the book is learning how to tune the soprano ukulele correctly, a key step in developing a musical ear and understanding the importance of sound in the learning process. Through simple, visual explanations, pupils learn to recognise the strings, their notes and standard tuning, laying the foundations for playing correctly.

The dictionary also introduces reading chord diagrams, an essential skill for accompanying songs and taking an active part in group music activities. The diagrams are presented clearly and progressively, making it easier to understand the fingerboard, finger placement and the link between chord, sound and movement. This work helps develop coordination, fine motor skills and visual memory.

Another key element is the introduction to the Latin note names (Do, Re, Mi…) and their English equivalents (C, D, E…), something especially relevant in music education today. This knowledge helps pupils become familiar with the musical vocabulary used internationally and makes it easier to understand materials, scores and resources in different languages. In this sense, the book is also a complementary resource for learning vocabulary in Spanish, bringing music and language together across the curriculum.

As for playing, the book works on basic left-hand fingerings, adapted to children’s small hands and designed to avoid unnecessary tension. This teaching approach ensures a healthy introduction to the instrument, respecting each pupil’s learning pace and encouraging a positive experience of music.

To put it all into practice, the book includes 12 Spanish children’s folk songs, such as “Cinco lobitos”, “Los pollitos” and “Martinillo, ¿dónde estás?”, chosen for their cultural, educational and musical value. This repertoire lets children apply the chords they have learnt in a familiar, meaningful musical context, linking learning the instrument with oral tradition, group singing and cultural identity. The songs help work on voice, rhythm, memory and the active participation of the whole class.

The material also includes two simple examples of the blues structure in the keys of A and C, as an accessible introduction to different musical forms. This broadens pupils’ musical horizons, encouraging active listening, first steps in improvisation and an understanding of basic harmonic patterns in a playful, age-appropriate way.

Mi primer diccionario de acordes de ukelele soprano is, in short, an educational resource designed for music lessons in Spanish, in line with competence-based, inclusive and cross-curricular music education. It is ideal for music teachers, schools, music schools and educational projects looking for practical, clear and pedagogically sound materials to bring the ukulele into the classroom.

A book that accompanies children in their first musical steps, nurtures a love of music and turns learning into a meaningful, creative and shared experience.

A music teaching resource for the youngest learners, designed to introduce them to the most basic chords on the soprano ukulele.
